Shallow soils may have formed on slopes where erosion has reduced the depth between the soil surface and the subsoil/regolith beneath. Shallow soils are described as "bony", with little structure and don't tend to grow grass well. Soil moisture-holding capacity is low and because the soil has little volume it dries out rapidly. Steeper slopes tend to have shallower soils.
